DREAMED SPACES

AJA WAALWIJK

3 April – 5 June 2026

Picture: Aja Waalwijk, Roundabout, acrylic on canvas, 75 x 150 cm.

Galerie Westerstorm invites you to the new exhibition DREAMED SPACES with drawings, paintings, collages and spatial work by Aja Waalwijk.

3 April – 5 June 2026

Under the name Transcendental Warriors, Aja Waalwijk provides photos of football players in particular through collage technology of weapons, helmets and harnesses. He incorporates coloured black and white photocopies of the resulting gladiators in monoprints with a landscape appearance. Coloured copies are incorporated in collages of landscapes and arenas. Some dream wars are analogous to, among other things, the historical mythological Mayan text Popol Vuh in which a severed head functions as a ball. The ultimate goal of this dualistic game is the Gate to Heaven and Hell.

In the Transstitutional Landscapes series, especially from the stationary perspective of a car on a highway, a far-reaching landscape is captured. After driving from Lisbon to Amsterdam at once, the artist sees this kind of image appear in front of his mind’s eye when he returns home in half-sleep. It is one of the ways in which he shapes transituationism in his work.

Life-Lines is a series of drawings about time. That time lapse is visualized with the help of lines is given an ancient one. Providing additional titles, the line, as a metaphor from lifeline to deadline, can also develop into a line play that opens up planes or spaces. Leitmotiv is a loner who moves across the flat plane, although it is not iconicly recognizable because of various stylistic approaches. A large part of the drawings have also been published in book form and available in the gallery.
